Social justice generally refers to the idea of creating a society or institution that is based on the principles of equality and solidarity, that understands and values human rights, and that recognizes the dignity of every human being. Today I would like to focus on the word from this definition equality. In dictionary.com the word equality means the state or quality of being equal; correspondence in quantity, degree, value, rank, or ability. This means that in a perfect world if we were equal nobody would be dying of hunger because of their economic status. Everybody should be able to have the same opportunities, but sadly we do not. Poverty happens, because we do not practice the principal of social justice. Poverty is defined as the condition of having an insufficient amount of resources or income. There are different types of poverty in the world such as, same degree poverty, absolute poverty, relative poverty and subjective poverty. Absolute poverty is the case where people lack basic human needs and it is the worst type of poverty. Poverty has many causes; some of the things that may lead to poverty are overpopulation, the unequal distribution in world economy, lack of employment and education opportunities. One of the reasons why GM Food was to created an end to world hunger, but the thing is that it has not change anything. People are still hungry and people are dying. Ok, now that you have heard some of the causes for poverty let us talk about some of the issues that poverty can create. Well, generally poverty has various serious consequences. In many countries where there are high rates of poverty, many of the local citizens faces the problem of famine (extreme and general scarcity of food, as in a country or a large geographical area), there is also a lack of hygiene, and the lack of education.
Famine is one of the consequences that come from poverty; it is also one of the most painful consequences too. Famine leads to hunger and hunger can lead to death. In a study that was made in 2010 by the World Hunger Education Service it estimated that there are about 925 million people suffering from hunger in the world and 578 million are from Asia and the pacific. Children are the most visible victims of hunger. Children who are poorly nourished suffer up to 160 days of illness each year. Poor nutrition plays a role in at least half of the 10.9 million child deaths each year. Poverty also creates lack of hygiene and this favors the increase of various harmful bacteria which resulting in the development of diseases such as cholera, malaria.
The poorest countries have the greatest number of failures in education. Education in every country is not free. So, those who do not even have a shelter, who are facing famine, how will they be able to afford paying for education? Education may also be the last worry and such type of people does not value education mostly. Without education the country will not be able to progress and this will lead to even greater poverty. This happens everywhere all the time, you have Africa for example. Africa is one of the richest country in resources in the world, jet it hast some of the poorest people too. The country does not have enough educated people or at least people with enough money to work with all the resources that it has. It has to do also with the distribution in world economy. You have people from other countries taking advantages from the situation and at the end the country is left with nothing to offer to its people.
Poverty also leads to alcoholism, drug-taking and gambling. Very often people facing such types of dilemmas look for an easy way to escape from their situation. They are weak, unable to face the problem head on. The most common way of escapism is by drinking alcohol. In addition, poverty also leads to violence in the society an even in homes. Poverty is very often the cause of high rates of divorce, family failures and also prostitution.
Finally, to put an end to all these, I suggest that the politicians should value their countries needs before spending billions of dollars on weapons. $105.6 billion would be required to move all family incomes above poverty level. I think that the biggest problem that humanity has that prevents it from caring for the well been of others is greed. Take for example all the billionaires in the world; they can end poverty if they wanted to. According to Forbes, a site that gives information about all the billionaires in the world said “This year's list broke records in size (1,210 billionaires) and total net worth ($4.5 trillion). China doubled its number of 10-figure fortunes, and Moscow now has more billionaires than any other city.” How come the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer? Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names (Global Issus). 22,000 children die each day due to conditions of poverty. What number has to be next year before we notice that we have to do something about it? GM food was supposed to help, but it has added to the problem. Now we have to worry about the animals that we have put in danger because of GM food. Now people are getting sick with the food that we are giving them. We need to come up with solutions to end world hunger that do not get them sick in the proses. Daniel Vargas
