The issue of genetically modified organisms is a social and economical topic. Genetically modified foods are not required by the U.S to be labeled if foods are inorganic. On the other hand, foods that are organic are labeled and expensive. Wealthy people can afford to eat organic food more than any other economic class therefore do not need to scavenge for organic food because they do not live in food deserts or money because they are wealthy. Genetic modifications (if used for research on cures or better treatments for diseases) can be beneficial for anybody and everyone who is impacted by illnesses; the only problem is the cost of these improved treatments and cures which will of course be available economically to the wealthy with illnesses and diseases.
Since classism in a way, can be compared to racism, the wealthy socialize with one another so that they can create more methods to keep the middle and poor classes inferior; money is power and is the vital resource for change: “multinational corporations are a reality, and as he points out in the following essay, their flexibility makes it possible for them to thrive by moving manufacturing plants nation to nation. The reasons for moving are sometimes connected to the infrastructure of a given nation” (252, Reich). The wealthy are exploiting everyone around the world; these people are corrupted with greed. Big apples that cost way less than organic ones can be affordable to someone who hasn’t eaten in days; why hasn’t he eaten in days? Unemployment rates are critical, people are getting evicted from “their” houses, gentrification, unfair court trails, and the elites having more money than they need are reasons that are accountable for people consuming large amounts of GM foods without them being aware.
Perspectives on this issue range from positive to negative. Some of the positive views on genetic modifications include preventing illnesses from spreading. For example, mosquitos in 2010 were modified to become malaria-resistant, reducing the spread of malaria and also saving lives. Crops can be genetically modified to become flood resistant, signal when they are nutrient deficient, and can grow faster. Since genetic modifications can cause crops to grow faster and more efficient, a famine is unlikely to happen because of the steady supply of crops due to the increased growing rate of the crops. Negative views include: GM being morally wrong because the genetic code is being rearranged which is basically altering the organism. Alterations in the case of genetic modifications are unnatural mutations which create unnatural genetic diversity; toying with nature should not be done because consequences are unknown and risky. GM foods are not yet known to cause health problems but it is possible that those health risks can sooner or later arise due to constant consumption of the modified foods.
Solutions on GMO prevention include creating awareness about the food we eat and to label GM foods. Creating awareness will inform people about the food that is consumed daily and how most of it is genetically modified. This solution will most likely backfire because many people need food to eat; since we are currently in a recession, people would overlook this solution and continue eating the modified foods for survival especially those who were struck by this recession. Having GM foods labeled can both create awareness and possibly give more ideas to the people who are concerned with the modification of organisms to prevent or expand GM research.

Genetically Modify Organisms
The genetically modify organisms issue effects every subjects, but I would like to focus on how GMO is political. The companies that make GM products do not have to label their products. So now, people in the United States are eating foods that do not know how it was created. “ Global cultivations GM crops has increased rapidly since 1996, when farmers in only six countries grew fewer than three million hectares of these crops… in 2008, farmers in 25 countries grew biotech, crops, and the global area of cultivation reached 125 million hectares” (Grossman, 2007). All of this has an effect on the environment, because is destroying plants that other animals rely on them for food.
Scientists and researchers have said that GMOs have the potential to help the world in great ways. That it can help end world hunger, that it can help the medical systems in poor countries and that is cheaper and faster to produce. The reality is that a lot more research needs to be done to see the effects on the environment on humans. Red flags have appeared on GMOs research. Plants have been affected by the chemicals that need to be used to grow the crops. Also, all the good things that GMOs were supposed to do have not happen. People have been eating GM food for years and no action has been taken to help poor countries. Kids are still starving and dying.
In conclusion, politics need to make laws that can control the used of GM food, because no good research has been done on GMOs and the effects that it may have on humans. The United States have to put money to do this research if we are to keep eating GM food. It might sound good, all the benefits, but the effects are still unknown.

This video talks about what kind of test GM food was to go through to make it to your local store.
